Employment Based Immigration
People seeking to become a U.S. citizen will generally follow one of two paths: family based immigration or employment based immigration. People seeking to obtain a Green Card through employment based immigration will be placed in one of several employment based preference categories, including:
- First Preference: Priority workers. People of extraordinary ability in the arts, sciences, education, business, or athletics. Outstanding professors, researchers, managers, and executives of multi-national companies. This category requires labor certification.
- Second Preference: Professional with advanced degrees or exceptional ability. This category requires labor certification except in cases of national interest.
- Third Preference: Skilled professionals and unskilled workers. This category requires a labor certification.
- Forth Preference: Special immigrants including religious workers. This category does not require a labor certification.
- Fifth Preference: Entrepreneurs and Investors. This category does not require a labor certification.
