French Express Entry Canada Draws: Should You Learn French for PR?

Blog21 October 2026

If you plan to move to Canada, learning French can give your Express Entry profile a major advantage. The French Express Entry Canada pathway is becoming more important as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to use category-based selection to invite candidates with French-language skills.

For applicants, understanding the French Express Entry Canada requirements can help decide whether spending time on French is worth it. So can French really help you get permanent residence faster?

What Is French Express Entry Canada?

French Express Entry Canada refers to the opportunities available to French-speaking candidates through Canada’s Express Entry system. IRCC has a French-language proficiency category and can invite eligible candidates through category-based draws.

To qualify for the French-language category, candidates usually need test results showing at least NCLC 7 in all four language abilities, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Candidates also must meet the eligibility requirements for an Express Entry program.

This makes French Express Entry Canada especially attractive to applicants with lower CRS scores than those invited in some general draws. Unlike some Express Entry categories, the French-language category does not require experience in a specific NOC occupation. Candidates simply need to qualify for an Express Entry program and meet the required French-language level.

For example, candidates applying through the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) need at least one year of continuous skilled work experience gained within the last 10 years. This is different from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), which generally requires at least one year of eligible Canadian work experience within the last three years.

For 2026, IRCC continues to include French-language proficiency as an Express Entry category. While IRCC has introduced and changed category-based selections, French-language proficiency remains an important part of Express Entry selection.

Do French Express Entry Draws Have Lower CRS Cutoffs?

One attraction of French Express Entry Canada is the chance for a separate selection opportunity.

French language draws Canada are category-based rounds. IRCC ranks candidates within the French Express Entry Canada category and invites the highest-ranking candidates. Because these draws focus on French-speaking candidates, their CRS cutoffs can differ from general Express Entry rounds.

However, there is no guaranteed CRS cutoff. The score can change depending on the number of candidates invited and IRCC’s selection priorities.

Therefore, French Express Entry Canada should not be seen as a shortcut to PR. Instead, French can create a pathway to an invitation.

What French Test Is Accepted for Express Entry?

To benefit from French Express Entry Canada, you need an approved language test.

IRCC currently accepts two French-language tests for Express Entry:

  • TEF Canada - Test d’évaluation de français

  • TCF Canada - Test de connaissance du français

Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. If you want to qualify for the French-language proficiency category, you usually need NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities. For TEF Canada, this means scores of 434 in reading, 428 in writing, 434 in listening, and 456 in speaking. For TCF Canada, the NCLC 7 thresholds are 453 in reading, 10 in writing, 458 in listening, and 10 in speaking.

Is Learning French for PR Worth It?

For candidates, French Express Entry Canada can be a good strategy, especially if improving English alone is unlikely to raise the CRS score enough.

French proficiency can open access to language draws, add extra CRS points in Canada, and give you more flexibility within the Express Entry system. However, learning French needs time and steady preparation. Your potential benefit depends on your CRS score, age, education, work experience, English ability, and French level.

Ultimately, French Express Entry Canada can be an option, but you should view it as part of your overall immigration strategy.
