Express Entry is not an immigration program but an online system created to manage Canada’s immigration application intake under Express Entry Canada.
To submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Express Entry Pool, the applicants should meet the eligibility criteria of any of the three Federal Canada immigration programs under the Express Entry system. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria must submit an online profile, an Expression of Interest (EOI) under one of three Federal Canada immigration programs, or a participating provincial immigration program to the Express Entry Pool as part of How to apply for Express Entry Canada.
The Express Entry System targets and gives permanent residency status to applicants who could contribute to the growth and economy of Canada through Express Entry Canada. Most Express Entry programs require skilled work experience in eligible TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupations to apply under this system.
Candidates applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program must score at least 67 points out of 100 on the FSW selection grid; the points are also calculated under the Comprehensive ranking system (CRS), which determines the points for an invitation to apply to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). According to IRCC, if your score is higher or equivalent to 67, you can apply to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker through Express Entry Canada.
If you do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you may still qualify under another Express Entry program or a Provincial Nominee Program, depending on your profile.
The Candidate in the pool is ranked based on the Comprehensive ranking system (CRS). Highest-ranking candidates from the pool will be invited to apply for Permanent Residence through rounds of invitation throughout the year under Express Entry Canada.

Category-Based Selection is a targeted invitation system within the federal immigration framework that invites skilled candidates from the Express Entry pool to apply for permanent residence based on specific economic needs identified by the government. Instead of issuing invitations solely by overall ranking, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may announce defined categories and then invite top-ranking eligible candidates in those categories to apply.
