Who Is Eligible for the Trade Occupations Category?

Canada continues to experience strong demand for skilled professionals in various trade occupations, including construction, electrical, mechanical, and industrial trades. Through Express Entry category-based selection, candidates with relevant work experience in eligible trade occupations may receive priority invitations to apply for Canada permanent residence (PR).

This targeted category helps Canada address labour shortages in essential trades while supporting the country’s growing infrastructure and construction sectors.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Trade Occupations category under Express Entry, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Have at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or the equivalent in part-time work experience, gained within the last three years.
  • The work experience must be in one eligible trade occupation identified by the Government of Canada.
  • The experience does not need to be continuous. The work experience does not need to be continuous.
  • The experience may be obtained in Canada or outside Canada.
  • Maintain a valid Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility criteria for the respective category-based draw.

Candidates who meet these requirements and have experience in eligible skilled trade occupations may be considered during targeted Express Entry draws. Those selected may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canada PR through the Express Entry system.
