Canada has unveiled a major update to its Express Entry Canada system for 2026, introducing new occupational categories, updating work experience requirements, and refining National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes to better reflect the country’s labour market and national priorities. New Priority Categories for 2026
The 2026 Express Entry overhaul introduces three new occupational priorities alongside existing categories:
Researchers with Canadian work experience
Senior managers with Canadian work experience
Transport occupations (pilots, aircraft mechanics, inspectors)
In addition, skilled military recruits are now eligible for Express Entry if they meet strict requirements, including a recognized foreign military background, a full-time job offer with the Canadian Armed Forces for at least three years, and a post-secondary credential of at least two years.
The government continues to prioritize draws for candidates in:
French-language proficiency
Healthcare and social services occupations
Trade occupations
A separate 2026 draw will also invite physicians with Canadian work experience, a category added in December 2025 to address critical doctor shortages.
These updates are particularly relevant for candidates currently in Canada on a Work permit Canada, including those holding a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) or Post graduate work permit Canada, as well as individuals on a Spousal open work permit Canada or canada spousal open work permit.
Retired and Reclassified Categories
Several categories and occupations have been removed or reclassified:
Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations — retired from priority categories.
Cooks (NOC 63200) — removed from the Trade category due to eligibility and draw fairness considerations.
Butchers (NOC 63201) — previously under Agriculture, are now part of Trade occupations and remain eligible for category-based draws.

Updated Work Experience Requirements
The 2026 Express Entry system now requires 1 year of work experience within the last three years to qualify for all occupational categories, including new priority categories.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience in the last 3 years (full-time or part-time; not required to be continuous).

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): 2 years of experience in the last 5 years.

Those who do not qualify under Express Entry may also explore options under the Provincial Nominee Program Canada (PNP canada), including streams such as Ontario PNP, Alberta PNP, or the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).
The 2026 Express Entry updates mark a strategic shift toward targeted immigration. While Agriculture and Cooks have been removed, Butchers remain eligible under Trade, and new categories for researchers, senior managers, transport workers, physicians, and military recruits provide focused pathways.
